SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon legislative committee heard an earful from local government officials about a proposal to strengthen the state’s public records laws in the wake of the scandal that led to former Gov. John Kitzhaber’s resignation. Officials from cities, counties and school districts told the House Rules Committee that they oppose the bill that would create deadlines for government agencies to respond to records requests and put a limit on fees. Local governments fear it would be too expensive and time consuming.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A Eugene woman says she’s concerned but hopeful as she waits to hear from her 21-year-old daughter and her daughter’s friend who were hiking in Nepal when the deadly earthquake struck. The Register-Guard newspaper reports that Jennifer Brazil says she just hopes to hear that the two are safe.

NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) – State officials say two inmates who jumped a fence at a minimum-security prison in Coos County have been recaptured. The state Department of Corrections says one was taken into custody near Lakeside. That’s about 15 miles north of the Shutter Creek Correctional Institution in North Bend. The agency says 44-year-old Harlan Brown was captured nine hours later at Coos Bay.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say an inmate who apparently hanged himself at the Deschutes County Jail had been given a mental health evaluation and did not appear to be suicidal. KTVZ-TV reports that the body of 35-year-old Eben Kaneshiro (CAN-uh-SHEER’-oh), a Portland martial arts instructor, was found Sunday in his cell.
