Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Two years ago, Oregon lawmakers agreed to shorten sentences for some crimes and let certain low-risk inmates out early to save money and avoid building new prisons. They said they’d use the savings to beef up probation and other punishments. Advocates of the plan worry that the Legislature will shortchange local governments that are taking on a bigger burden for punishing people.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend and holding her daughter hostage has been sentenced to 60 years in prison. The Statesman Journal reports Dustin Bryant of Turner also faces an additional three years in prison for kidnapping and robbery with a firearm. Bryant killed Adrian Bird in November 2013, then held her 2-year-old daughter hostage.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – A conservation group says Idaho officials are overestimating the number of wolves in the state because they use sightings by hunters rather than relying solely on trained professionals. But state officials say the report released April 3 by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game estimating 770 wolves as of Dec. 31 is if anything too low.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Rookie Cyle Larin scored in his first start and Kaka added a goal on a penalty kick to give expansion Orlando City a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers yesterday. Former Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts got his second shutout of the season to help Orlando City. The loss snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak at home for the Timbers.
