SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon House lawmakers are considering legislation that defines and bans racial profiling by law enforcement agencies. The measure was introduced in the wake of widespread protests touched off by the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer in Missouri. The measure would also establish a system for people to file profiling-based complaints.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A Eugene police spokeswoman says an officer has fatally shot a reportedly suicidal man. She says neither the dead man nor the officer was immediately identified. No officers were injured. The spokeswoman says an interagency team will investigate the shooting.

SUMPTER, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a fish and wildlife trooper managed to rescue a disabled 81-year-old woman from a burning house in eastern Oregon. Authorities say Baker City-based Trooper Brad Duncan located the woman and her son still inside the home and was told she was unable to stand or walk on her own. As smoke poured in through the door and the house began to burn, Duncan carried the woman out of the house to safety.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Zoo officials in Portland say they have euthanized a 31-year-old elephant known for his enthusiasm for painting. They decided Rama was in too much pain from an old leg injury. The Oregonian reports that Rama suffered a leg injury in 1990 when older female elephants pushed the young bull out of the Portland zoo’s herd, a practice naturally seen in the wild.
