PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A Pendleton couple’s home is being demolished after a worker dumped 150 gallons of diesel into their basement. The East Oregonian newspaper reports that Pendleton Grain Growers made the mistake Nov. 24 while delivering fuel to the home that Brent Merriman and Michele Lowary owned. A driver for the agricultural cooperative was confused about where to deliver the fuel. The co-op’s insurance is paying to demolish the home and build a new one.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon police officer shot and killed a cougar after it was spotted above a hiking trail. KTVZ-TV reports that the animal was seen Saturday evening near the summit of Pilot Butte, a 500-foot extinct cinder cone volcano, in Bend. It was a large male, just 15 yards from a paved road and hiking trail used by hundreds of people daily.

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) – The Cottage Grove City Council has approved the design for a renovated armory building The council hopes the old armory becomes a community gathering space for dances, youth sports tournaments and town hall meetings. The building hasn’t been needed for military use since the Oregon National Guard moved more than five years ago.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – Umatilla County weed control supervisor Dan Durfey says invasive garlic mustard has spread to the Umatilla River and the Oxbow site in Hermiston. Durfey tells the East Oregonian newspaper garlic mustard will eliminate small native plants. He says it can be difficult to spot because it blends with other plants in wetter areas near trees.
