BEND, Ore. (AP) – A warm winter and lack of snowpack could mean an earlier start to wildfire season in central Oregon. Deschutes County forester Ed Keith tells the Bend Bulletin that timber fires typically don’t occur until August but they may come in June or July. Where blazes take hold earlier this year may depend on what happens with the weather this spring.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say they have issued a citation to an Oregon man who tried to board an airplane with bear paws in his luggage. The Eugene Register-Guard reports Transportation Security Administration agents discovered the paws earlier this month in Hong-Shiou Chiou’s luggage at the Eugene Airport. He was cited for unlawful possession of game parts.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has approved state money to help the city of Pendleton build hangars and storage facilities at a testing site for commercial drones in eastern Oregon. Brown on Friday announced a $545,000 grant for the Pendleton Unmanned Aerial Systems Range, one of three test ranges in Oregon. She and others say the money will help keep the state competitive in the emerging market for drones. The Eastern Oregonian newspaper reports the state’s economic agency Business Oregon also plans to add $1.1 million.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Marion County sheriff’s office says it’s investigating the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old man near Salem. The shooting happened late Saturday.
