SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has signed first-of-its-kind legislation under which anyone with an Oregon driver’s license will be automatically registered to vote. During the signing ceremony yesterday, Brown said the bill makes voting more secure, cost effective and convenient. Officials say it will add about 300,000 new voters.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon man who pointed a laser at commercial airliners has been sentenced to six months in federal prison. Stephen Bukucs (BOO’-kitch) apologized in court, saying he was filled with shame. Prosecutors say he shined the high-powered laser at airplanes more than 20 times. The judge said he was lenient because Bukucs was suffering from mental illness at the time of the crime.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The U.S Justice Department has issued its first statement regarding the departure of Oregon’s top federal prosecutor. The department would not confirm it’s investigating Amanda Marshall, but clarified that a subordinate of hers is not the focus of any investigation. Marshall’s attorney told The Oregonian last week that an investigation is under way.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Geological Survey and the Cascades Volcano Observatory hope to install four volcano monitoring stations on the upper flanks of Mount Hood. Scientists say that although it’s not erupting, Mount Hood signals that it is an active volcano. The stations would be in a wilderness area, away from trails.
