SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Inmates supervised by sheriff’s deputies
spent two days helping a Yamhill farm that takes in rescue horses.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says 70 inmates put in about
1,000 hours Friday and Saturday at the Yamhill farm of Dr. Barbara
Kahl, owner and operator of United SPCA. Sheriff Jason Myers says
Kahl has never asked for help from counties but he and his peers
wanted to offer inmate work crew maintenance as a service project.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A federal study has found that Oregon has
overpaid nearly $400 million in unemployment benefits. The
Oregonian reports the overpayment represents about 12 percent of
the $3.5 billion paid in benefits during the three years that ended
in June. Oregon officials aim to recover the money, which
originates from employers, not individual taxpayers. But they say
fraud cases have swamped the Employment Department, where caseloads
at one point reached 400 per investigator, up from 150 before the
recession.
BAY CITY, Ore. (AP) – Pacific Oyster Company of Bay City is
voluntarily recalling 194 cases of Nate’s Spiced Prawns because of
allergy concerns. The product packaging doesn’t alert consumers
that the seafood contains sulfites. People with allergies to
sulfites face serious or life-threatening allergic reactions. The
prawns were distributed to retailers in Oregon and Washington.
MILWAKIE, Ore. (AP) – More Oregon public schools are opening up
their buildings for church services to bring in some extra income.
In the state, eight of the 10 biggest districts currently rent out
buildings for religious services. The Oregonian reports that while
some believe that school-based churches violate the Constitutional
requirement of separation between church and state, the courts have
generally found the practice to be legal.
