UNDATED (AP) – A person familiar with the moves says cornerback Byron Maxwell has agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity yesterday. Maxwell started 17 games for the Seattle Seahawks over the last two seasons and played opposite All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman in a star-studded secondary.

SEATTLE (AP) – Clint Dempsey scored twice and Obafemi Martins added a goal to help the Seattle Sounders beat the New England Revolution 3-0 last night in the opener for both teams. Dempsey, who had 15 goals last season, put Seattle on the board midway through the 25th minute. Coming off a club-record 18-goal performance, Martins scored in the 41st minute.

SEATTLE (AP) – Taylor Greenfield scored a career-high 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting, Amber Orrange had 10 points in the second half, and No. 19 Stanford won its 11th Pac-12 Conference tournament championship with a 61-60 win over California yesterday. The Cardinal earned the Pac-12’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – After weeks of weather-related headaches, the top official for the Iditarod was finally able to smile. Stan Hooley, the chief executive officer of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, felt the relief after arriving in Fairbanks yesterday and seeing snow on the ground. The ceremonial start of the world’s most famous race was held in miserable conditions Saturday. The temperature in Anchorage was about 40 degrees with rain. Snow had to be trucked in for the ceremonial start. The official start of the race is in Fairbanks today.
