SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate has voted to send Gov. Kate Brown a bill automatically registering voters by using state driver’s license records. Lawmakers approved the measure 17-13 today, largely along party lines. The bill was Brown’s idea as secretary of state. She said she’ll sign it. She has estimated that 300,000 new voters will be registered.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – An Albany man is accused of kidnapping, raping and trying to kill a woman he held against her will for about a week. An affidavit says the woman slipped away from 37-year-old Craig Lazon on Monday and ran to a neighbor’s house for help. Court documents say he had previously been convicted of assaulting the woman.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Archaeologists have uncovered a stone tool at an ancient rock shelter in eastern Oregon that could turn out to be older than any known site of human occupation in western North America. A University of Oregon archaeologist supervising the dig says the tool was found below a layer of volcanic ash from an eruption of Mount St. Helens 15,800 years ago.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews ruptured his left Achilles tendon in Portland’s game against the Dallas Mavericks last night and is out for the season. Matthews was averaging 16.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 assist per game with the Blazers. Portland went on to beat the Mavericks, 94-75.
