Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A globe-trotting veterinarian held for six months in a Southeast Asian country has returned to Oregon, landing last night at Portland International Airport. KATU-TV reports that Stacey Addison told reporters she’s thrilled to be back and thankful for all the support she received. She was arrested in September after sharing a taxi with a stranger who asked the driver to stop so he could pick up a package. Police stopped the vehicle, determined the package contained methamphetamine and took everyone to jail.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – If police and prosecutors find no evidence of reckless or negligent driving, the man who killed three children in Springfield could face only traffic violations. The Register-Guard reports 68-year-old Larry LaThorpe of Springfield hasn’t been arrested or cited for Feb. 22 collision. LaThorpe said he had a green light and didn’t see pedestrians in the crosswalk until after his pickup struck them.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Thanks to the generosity of some southern Oregon businesses, a family whose 6-year-old son was publicly punished for tardiness now has a refurbished minivan to help make sure he gets to school on time. A photo posted on Facebook of young Hunter Cmelo (cuh-MEL-oh) sitting isolated behind a cardboard screen in a school lunchroom generated widespread outrage. Lincoln Elementary in Grants Pass said last week it won’t be using that punishment again.

SEATTLE (AP) – A new baby orca wasn’t the only interesting discovery NOAA Fisheries researchers made while tracking endangered killer whales at sea off the Northwest coast. The team returned to Newport this week after 21 days following the orcas to find out where they go and what they eat in the winter. Researchers are sharing findings at a briefing today.
