SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Democrats in the Oregon House have approved a bill aimed at combatting climate change despite Republican threats to derail a proposed transportation spending plan. The bill heads to Democratic Gov. Kate Brown, who has spoken favorably of it. The measure requires fuel producers to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their products by 10 percent over 10 years.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. Brown has signed a bill that changes the way Oregon handles class-action lawsuits. The bill was a top priority for Democrats, who used their newly expanded House and Senate majorities to quickly push it through the Legislature. Republicans say the measure would make it far too easy to bring large lawsuits in Oregon.

BROOKINGS, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say an early morning house fire killed three people near Brookings. A Brookings police officer was first on the scene. He saw a 10-year-old girl walking away from a fully engulfed mobile home while holding an infant who had serious burns. The sheriff says 54-year-old Douglas Landers had helped the 10-year-old crawl through a small bedroom window and then handed her the baby. Landers, however, could not make it out.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Authorities have unsealed an affidavit providing the first look at the investigation into the death of a 6-month-old whose father says he forgot her, leaving her for six hours in a suburban Portland parking lot with the windows rolled up. The Oregonian reports the document doesn’t specify the cause of death but suggests police suspect heat. Authorities await lab test results. No charges have been filed.
