PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Union Pacific says two freight trains derailed in Oregon, one in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon, the other in the Cascade Range. A total of 15 cars got off the tracks yesterday. Nobody was hurt. Near Meacham in Umatilla County, a tank car carrying hazardous material rolled down a bank and came to rest near a creek. A railroad spokesman says in an email that no release of hazardous material has been confirmed.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say one man is dead after a shooting in north Portland. The Oregonian reports the victim was a 29-year-old man who was shot while sitting in the driver’s seat of a car. Police identified him as Marquis Chaney, a resident of the neighborhood where the shooting took place. The Oregon state medical examiner says an autopsy is planned for today.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A federal appeals court has rejected a timber industry lawsuit seeking to strip Endangered Species Act protection from a threatened seabird that nests in old-growth forests. Environmentalists say the ruling should mark the end of a 15-year legal battle over logging trees used by marbled murrelets along the coasts of Oregon, Washington and Northern California.

VALE, Ore. (AP) – The owner of a van filled with 68 cats that were malnourished and had only three litter boxes among them has been sentenced in Eastern Oregon to five years of probation. For 52-year-old Cynthia Allen, that also means five years of no cats or other animals.
