LOS ANGELES (AP) – The nation’s top labor official is ratcheting up pressure on the two sides haggling over a new contract for dockworkers at West Coast seaports, saying if they don’t reach an agreement by today, they’ll have to leave California and negotiate in Washington. The talks in San Francisco began nine months ago, but broke down in recent weeks. As negotiations drag on, billions of dollars of cargo sits on ships anchored outside the 29 ports.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A psychic who used an elaborate con to steal millions of dollars from the heir to an Oregon timber fortune has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison. As part of the fraud, Rachel Lee got her teenage daughter to pretend to be a British woman named Mary Marks. Lee and her daughter later duped Ralph Raines Jr. into believing he and Marks were married and had a son.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Forest Grove say a man entered an elementary school classroom, grabbed a third grade boy, released the child as school staff intervened and ran off yesterday. The 7-year-old boy was unhurt. Police took the man into custody after Joseph Gale Elementary school staffers chased him into a nearby neighborhood. Detectives are trying to determine his motive.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police homicide detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a 22-year-old woman whose body was found in the Willamette River. The woman’s 22-year-old boyfriend has been detained as part of the investigation. The woman was not immediately identified. The state medical examiner will determine a cause of death.
