PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland City Council has voted 5-0 to raise the hourly wage for more than 170 workers to at least $15 an hour. The Oregonian reports that 16 of the affected workers are full-time city employees. The remaining 157 are parking attendants, janitors or security workers who are full-time but paid by contractors that are subject to the city’s Fair Wage policy.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Starting July 1, if you want to play golf on any of five Portland municipal golf courses, you won’t be able to smoke. City Council members have banned smoking at all city-owned parks and nature areas, including four city-owned golf facilities. Portland joins a handful of other large cities in banning smoking on city-owned golf courses.

DALLAS, Ore. (AP) – The Polk County sheriff’s office says more than four dozen neglected horses and goats have been rescued from a property in Dallas, Oregon. Deputies who visited the property in late January with a veterinarian determined many of the horses were emaciated and in need of immediate care. One horse was dead. Owner Monica Foster of Dallas was cited for investigation of animal neglect.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Jerome Kersey, the small forward who played his first 11 NBA seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers and helped the San Antonio Spurs win the 1999 title, has died. He was 52. The Trail Blazers confirmed last night that Kersey had died. Kersey appeared Tuesday with fellow former Blazers Terry Porter and Brian Grant at a Portland school in celebration of African American History Month.
