REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) – Investigators say DNA evidence has linked an Oregon prison inmate to at least two of five killings of young women that terrified the San Francisco Bay Area for four months in 1976. The San Mateo district attorney’s office says 66-year-old Rodney Halbower is also being investigated for the rest of the killings and the death of a teenager in Nevada.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An 80-year-old Coos Bay woman was struck in a crosswalk and fatally injured as she left a Portland-area hospital last night. Police say Betty Sandra Glassman and her 54-year-old daughter had just left Providence St. Vincent Medical Center on foot after visiting the older woman’s husband. The daughter, Sherry Glassman-Beebe, suffered minor injuries.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 30-year-old Portland woman who admitted pouring hot bacon grease on her ex-boyfriend as he slept on her sofa has been to more than two years in prison. The Oregonian reports Shirlee Franklin let her ex-boyfriend into her apartment and allowed him sleep on her sofa last July because he had been banging on her windows and door.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Labor strife at seaports along the West Coast prompted thousands of dockworkers to rally against employers they say are trying to exploit a crisis of cargo congestion at harbors that handle about $1 trillion worth of goods annually. While labor contract negotiators took the day off yesterday, port police estimated that 6,000 people took part in the rally in Los Angeles and Long Beach. Hundreds more rallied in Tacoma, Washington.
