SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s Democratic legislative leaders are proposing a nearly $600 million increase in funding for primary and secondary schools during the next two-year budget cycle. The budget would allocate $330 million more to K-12 schools than Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber’s proposal, which was criticized by school advocates. They also would spend less on early-childhood education.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A wild duck shot by a hunter in the Willamette Valley is the first wild bird in Oregon to test positive for avian flu since the disease showed up recently in Washington. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says the female mallard was taken Dec. 20 at Fern Ridge Wildlife Area outside Eugene and was tested as part of a program initiated since avian flu appeared in Washington.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in Portland found the body of a young man in a water feature outside a Pearl District condominium. Investigators don’t suspect foul play. Portland police say the body of 19-year-old Zacharee Stanford was found yesterday and he was dressed as though he were living outdoors. The cause of death is pending toxicology results.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – The newly repainted Yaquina (ya-KWINN-a) Lighthouse on the Oregon coast is getting ready to make its debut. The Bureau of Land Management says the 95-foot-tall lighthouse has been surrounded by scaffolding and wrapping since mid-October as old paint was removed and a natural cement wash was applied. Weather permitting, it’s expected to take three more weeks before it reopens for tours.
