CANBY, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say two people are dead after a head-on crash near Canby. Lt. Josh Brooks says it appears that a Hyundai Accent sedan crossed the center line on Highway 99E on Monday morning and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer rig loaded with an asphalt roller. The car’s driver died and a young female passenger suffered fatal injuries. The commercial truck driver was not hurt and is cooperating with the investigation.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – John Kitzhaber has kicked off his fourth term as Oregon governor. The Democrat took the oath of office in a ceremony at the state Capitol on Monday. He was joined by his fiancee, Cylvia Hayes, who has been the center of controversy over revelations about her personal life and her consulting business. Kitzhaber will be working with the strongest Democratic legislative majorities he’s had in 12 years as governor.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – A grand jury has found that a police officer on the Oregon Coast was justified in fatally shooting a man who pointed what turned out to be a toy replica gun at the officer. Douglas County District Attorney Rick Wesenberg says investigators later determined the gun was an airsoft .45-caliber automatic pistol. He says 55-year-old Robert J. Jenkins of Roseburg suffered from schizophrenia and had stopped taking his medication.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Cover Oregon has announced 62 layoffs in connection with the shutdown of the failed health insurance exchange. Oregon’s Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development received notice of the mass layoff in a letter dated Jan. 8.
