PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A report shows an Oregon man who killed a California sheriff’s deputy last year died from a self-inflicted wound during the ensuing shootout with a police officer. The finding follows contradictory reports over whether Ricardo Chaney died from an officer’s bullet or his own. Chaney fatally shot Deputy Ricky Del Fiorentino on March 19.

ROCKY POINT, Ore. (AP) – A Southern Oregon property owned for a few years by one of the richest men in the country has been refurbished and has reopened as a resort and marina. The Klamath Falls Herald and News reports the current owner is John Pratt. He spent three years bringing the place back from disrepair and still has work to do.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) – A utility will pay $2.5 million in fines, restitution and community service after pleading guilty to killing golden eagles and other birds at two Wyoming wind farms. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act violations stem from the deaths of protected birds at PacifiCorp’s Seven Mile Hill and Glenrock/Rolling Hills wind farms. PacifiCorp serves 1.8 million customers in California, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A Canadian company says it plans to submit a new application for exploratory drilling northeast of Mount St. Helens after a federal judge invalidated its permits last year. A spokesman with Ascot Resources yesterday said the company’s plan is still to drill to explore for minerals within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. A judge in Portland found that federal agencies violated environmental laws in approving the permits.
