SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Department of Transportation report says the use studded tires in Oregon has fallen 75 percent since 2000. And officials say that has resulted in less damage to the state’s roads. In 2012, studded tires caused an estimated $8.5 million in damage to Oregon highways. The use of studded tires has dropped from about 16 percent 14 years ago to about 4 percent this year.

SEASIDE, Ore. (AP) – Authorities are investigating the death of a young child in Seaside. The Oregonian reports the death was called into 911 early Saturday and police are releasing little information about what happened, including the child’s name and age. The state Department of Human Services has taken custody of other children found in the home, but no arrests have been made.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Deschutes County Sheriff Larry Blanton has announced his retirement. The 58-year-old Blanton told The Bulletin newspaper it’s time do something else after holding the job for seven years. Blanton’s last day is June 30, so he’s leaving office about a year and a half before the end of his term in November 2016.

UNDATED (AP) — Three fishermen from the Northwest are being honored with Carnegie Hero medals for helping save five members of another commercial fishing boat from drowning when it capsized near Kodiak Island, Alaska, in January 2012. The medals were awarded today to Gregory Plancich and Daniel Hardwick of Vashon, Jim Fultz of Siletz, Oregon and Wayne Kitt of Loon Lake, Washington.
