GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Many in Indian Country are wary of the idea of legalizing marijuana on tribal lands, even if the U.S. Justice Department says it’s OK. The department said yesterday that Indian tribes can grow and sell marijuana on tribal lands as long as they follow the same federal conditions laid out for states that have legalized the drug. Oregon U.S. Attorney Amanda Marshall says the new policy addresses questions raised by tribes about how legalization of pot in several states affects Indian lands.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The president of the University of Oregon says he’s raising the school’s defenses against other schools that recruit faculty members. The Eugene Register-Guard reports the school’s tally is 25 tenured or tenure-track faculty members who’ve been recruited away in the past four years. That includes two top brain researchers who recently told the school they would leave next year for the University of Chicago.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A first-grade teacher in Salem is a winner of the Milken Educator Award for excellence in education, which comes with a $25,000 prize. Julie Cleave is one of 40 winners across the country and the only one in Oregon. She was presented with the award Thursday at an assembly at Hallman Elementary School, where 74 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota won the Walter Camp player of the year award last night. Mariota is the first Oregon player to win the award. The junior is a Heisman Trophy finalist and the front-runner to win that award tomorrow night in New York. He also won the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.
