Weather ForecastFlorence Driver has close call.

11 December 2014

Sustained winds of 80 miles an hour at Sea Lion Caves, with wind gusts nearing 90-miles an hour were recorded this afternoon as a strong pacific wind-storm surged north along the Oregon Coast.

Winds in town were reported at more than 50 miles an hour.

Some area schools closed for the day in response to an early morning High Wind Warning issued by the weather service, others closed by midday as winds began increasing in intensity.

In Florence, a driver on Kingwood Street narrowly escaped serious injury when a tree, toppled by the wind, fell on her car shortly after one pm. That prompted emergency officials to remind people to stay off the streets.

Lane County Sheriff Tom Turner was scheduled to be in Florence this evening for a “Community Conversation”.   He’s postponed that meeting until a later date.
