High Wind Warning – School Closure in Florence

The heaviest winds are expected to come ashore on the Central Oregon Coast around midday, and when they do, they could reach 85 miles an hour at times.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning today. According to forecasters winds will rapidly increase later this morning with the strongest winds during the afternoon.

The warning prompted officials at Siuslaw School District to cancel classes and all activities for the day. Head Start in Florence is also cancelled for today, as are all after school athletics.

While the weather this morning may seem fairly routine, Superintendent Ethel Angal said the highest winds are expected to strike this afternoon n about the time kids will be getting on school buses and heading for home. She said district policy is now very clear about not placing students and their families in jeopardy in a situation like this.

In Mapleton, Superintendant Jodi O’Mara said classes there will continue, but they will monitor the situation.
