RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The run of stout defense started with slowing down Arizona, followed by the handcuffing of San Francisco on Thanksgiving night. But the best defensive performance of Pete Carroll’s tenure came Sunday when Seattle held the high-scoring Philadelphia Eagles to 139 total yards. The defending Super Bowl champions have now had the best three week run of any NFL defense since 2011.

NEW YORK (AP) – Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, Alabama receiver Amari Cooper and record-breaking Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon are the finalists for the Heisman Trophy. Mariota is considered the clear the front-runner to win the 80th Heisman Saturday night in New York. The last Oregon quarterback to come so close to the award was Joey Harrington, who finished fourth in 2001’s Heisman voting.

SEATTLE (AP) – Former U.S national team goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann has announced his retirement from soccer after spending the majority of his career playing in England. The 42-year-old was a backup for the Seattle Sounders for the past two years. He announced his retirement through the club on Monday.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Timbers have acquired veteran defender Nat Borchers from Real Salt Lake, one of a flurry of moves Monday for Portland’s Major League Soccer team. Portland sent allocation money to Salt Lake in exchange for the 33-year-old Borchers, who has started for RSL for the past seven seasons and was a key contributor to the 2009 MLS Cup-winning team.
