BEND, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber’s proposed budget does not include long-term funding for Oregon State University’s branch campus in Bend. Oregon State requested $30 million for the campus that’s expanding next year to a four-year institution, but only ranked it fourth on a list of priorities. The request for money from the 2015 Legislature would be used to construct buildings.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s largest county has posted the results of its Measure 92 recount, adding a few votes to require the labeling of genetically engineered food. The Oregonian reports that Multnomah County tallied 25 more “yes” votes, and had no change in “no” votes. It seems unlikely that the recount will result in a different outcome from last month’s election.
LAS VEGAS (AP) – Interior Secretary Sally Jewell told Western governors that the federal government is trying to find a way to save the sage grouse without having to list the bird as an endangered species. Jewell, during the Western Governors’ Association’s winter meeting in Las Vegas, said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been working with environmentalists and officials in 11 Western states to find a solution to protect the species and its habitat.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) – A century-long losing battle against an invasive weed responsible for fueling massive western wildfires and threatening native species and rangeland could be about to turn around. Cheatgrass has become the most common plant in the Intermountain West. But federal scientists say recent discoveries with fungus and bacteria offer hope that its steady advance can be halted.
