McMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) – Authorities have tentatively identified a man who fatally stabbed a Linfield College football player in the chest at a convenience store near the Oregon college campus. The Yamhill County District Attorney’s office says the assailant is 33-year-old Joventino Arenas of McMinnville. Police shot and killed Arenas when he returned to the store and confronted officers with a knife. Investigators say the stabbing appears to be random.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State University’s president has apologized to a woman who alleged in 1998 that she was raped at a Corvallis apartment by four men, including two university football players. President Ed Ray’s statement said the apology was for any failure on the school’s part. Ray ordered an internal review of the university’s response and asked his staff to examine the police reports to see if there are actions the school can take now.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man described as a ringleader of a coast-to-coast ring of diamond thieves has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The Oregonian reports that Ernest Remor was sentenced yesterday. A woman described as a minor figure in the thefts got three years of probation.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say a 42-year-old female inmate has died at the Linn County Jail in Albany of what is described as an apparent medical condition. The Oregonian reports that the county sheriff’s office says jail staffers found Samantha Robinson of Lebanon unresponsive early yesterday.
