PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Forecasters say the Portland-Vancouver area is in the path of snow, sleet and freezing rain today as moist Pacific air from the southwest hit entrenched frigid air. The Weather Service expects 3 to 5 inches of snow today in the metro area before it turns to sleet or freezing rain in the afternoon and evening.

  1. LOUIS (AP) – Monsanto Co. says it will pay $2.4 million to settle a dispute with farmers in the Pacific Northwest over genetically modified wheat. The discovery of the genetically modified wheat in Oregon in 2013 prompted Japan and South Korea to temporarily suspend some wheat orders, and the European Union called for more rigorous testing of U.S. shipments.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Members of Congress from states with legal pot are banding together to tell their colleagues on Capitol Hill not to interfere with state drug laws. Voters in Oregon, Alaska and the District of Columbia approved ballot initiatives last week that legalize marijuana possession.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The number of Oregon students who were homeless during the past school year has jumped. The state Education Department says that over 18,900 students were homeless at some point during the 2013-14 academic year, an increase of 737 students from the year before. The number includes students who live in motels or move between the homes of friends and relatives.
