GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A swarm of earthquakes in the remote desert where Oregon, California and Nevada come together can be traced to the constant stretching of the earth’s crust. Similar swarms underneath populated areas have culminated in quakes in the magnitude 5.0 range that cracked walls and toppled chimneys, but this one is so remote that any damage is unlikely. Since July, the swarm has generated more than 800 tremors that registered on seismographs.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Willamette University student has been arrested in connection with the homicide investigation of a 66-year-old man. Twenty-two-year-old Beau Smith is also a wide receiver for the university’s football team. Police say Smith was arrested, a short distance from the place where Michael Hampshire’s body was found off campus.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Eugene police arrested a 40-year-old man accused of killing his mother. A police spokesman said officers took Timothy Cowell into custody after discovering the body of 61-year-old Elaine Wooden in a Eugene apartment. Public records show Cowell with previous arrests for burglary and robbery. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The number of Oregon students who were homeless during the past school year has jumped. The state Education Department said that nearly 19,000 students were homeless at some point during the 2013-14 academic year. That’s an increase of more than 700 students from the year before. The homeless classification applies to students who lack a fixed and regular nighttime residence, such as those who live in motels.
