NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – The woman who said she threw her 6-year-old son off a historic bridge in the coastal Oregon city of Newport has been arrested on murder and manslaughter charges. Police say Jillian Meredith McCabe of Seal Beach called 911 at 6:25 last night to report she had thrown her son off the Yaquina Bay Bridge. The Coast Guard and Lincoln County searchers found the body 4 hours later in the bay.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber has been battered by the failure of the state’s health insurance website and revelations about his fiancee. Now, he’s limping into Election Day seeking a fourth term that he says will be his last. The Democratic governor faces state Rep. Dennis Richardson, who hopes voters have enough dissatisfaction with Kitzhaber’s performance to pick a Republican governor for the first time since 1982.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The most expensive ballot measure campaign in Oregon history is coming to an end. Supporters and opponents of Measure 92 have combined to raise well over $25 million, and it’s all because of four words: “Produced with genetic engineering.” If the measure is approved, those words would appear on food made with genetically modified ingredients. Opponents say genetically engineered crops are safe.
VATICAN CITY (AP) – The Vatican’s top bioethics official calls “reprehensible” the Oregon suicide of a woman suffering terminal brain cancer who stated she wanted to die with dignity. Brittany Maynard’s suicide in Oregon on Saturday has stirred debate over assisted suicide for the terminally ill.
