SALEM, Ore. (AP) – One in five Oregonians has returned a ballot with one week left before the November 4th deadline. Voters are deciding on races for governor, U.S. Senate and the legislature, as well as a variety of ballot measures including marijuana legalization and a labeling requirement for genetically engineered foods.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – Several members of Oregon’s congressional delegation say the Coast Guard has agreed to keep a rescue helicopter at Newport two weeks longer than it had planned – until December 15th. The agency’s Newport air station had been scheduled to close November 30th due to budget cuts. Crabbing season is scheduled to start the next day.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The state has fined a crab fisherman $13,370 for dumping more than a ton of rotten mink carcasses into the Brookings-Harbor marina last spring. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality said yesterday the fine was levied against fisherman Charles Vincent Case of Harbor for polluting state waters.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Prosecutors say a Grants Pass man accused of punching a deputy U.S. marshal in the face inside Portland’s federal courthouse is being charged with assault of a federal officer. The Oregonian reports that court documents say 32-year-old Daniel Martin entered the courthouse on October 23rd wearing what appeared to be a garbage bag and asked for help, saying he feared people were after him, before punching Deputy Marshal Bud Delay.
