CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – Lawmakers on opposite sides of the nation are working to keep U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopters stationed along their coasts. The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that South Carolina’s U.S. senators are working with Democratic U.S. Sen Ron Wyden of Oregon to keep the helicopters in place. The Coast Guard wants to remove rescue helicopters from near Charleston and from Newport, Oregon, to save money.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say the driver of a stolen car attempted to get away from officers in Portland yesterday and crashed into a patrol car, injuring a sergeant. An officer had attempted to stop the car in the parking lot at Portland Community College when it took off. Officers arrested the driver Troy Lynn Harrison on charges including assault, hit-and-run and possessing a stolen vehicle.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – A Redmond man who volunteered with the Bend Police Department is in custody in connection with the sexual abuse of an 8-year-old girl. The Bend Bulletin reports Randy Moore faces charges of seven counts of first-degree sex abuse. Redmond officials credit a curriculum that teaches children about sexual abuse with leading to Moore’s arrest.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – One duck hunter accidentally shot another in the leg as the men from Bend climbed over a downed tree while returning to their car yesterday along the Deschutes River near Sunriver. KTVZ reports Colton Nye was treated at the scene by Sunriver medics and flown to St. Charles Bend hospital where he’s in fair condition.
