SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The mother of a 3-year-old Salem girl who died after she was found face down in a bathtub last year has been indicted on a charge of second-degree manslaughter. Mercedes Alvarado appeared in court yesterday and was ordered held without bail. The Statesman Journal reports that her lawyer asked that she be granted bail because of her three children, including one infant. Judge Channing Bennett denied the request.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A nanny has been sentenced to 1½ years in prison for leaving two young children in a minivan on a hot day while she visited a Portland tanning salon. KPTV reports that prosecutors said Kristin Jones pleaded guilty yesterday to charges including perjury, which stemmed from her falsely telling a judge on the record that she has a daughter with brain cancer.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A psychotic man who was using methamphetamine when he carjacked a van last August in Medford has been sentenced to up to 20 year at the Oregon State Hospital. A Jackson County judge gave Christopher Willard the maximum period under the care of the Psychiatric Security Review Board.

SEATTLE (AP) – Vice President Joe Biden is overnighting in Seattle in advance of two events that are part of a West Coast political swing. Biden was in Portland yesterday to help Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley with his bid for a second term.
