PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Vice President Joe Biden is expected in Oregon today to help Sen. Jeff Merkley with his bid for a second term. Biden will rally supporters at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland and hold a private fundraiser before heading to Seattle. Biden is on a West Coast tour to promote a minimum wage hike and boost Democratic campaigns as the party tries to maintain control of the Senate.
OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – A Clackamas County Judge told David Brian Martin he was “everyone’s worst nightmare” as the 32-year-old was sentenced to 38 years in prison for breaking into a Molalla home and raping a woman. The Oregonian reports the victim confronted Martin during yesterday’s sentencing and called him selfish and evil. Martin said in court he’s not a monster and blamed his behavior on a horrible combination of drugs.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Lane County health officials say two cats are at risk after they were found playing with a dead bat in a barn. A preliminary test shows the bat had rabies. The Register-Guard reports that a family living near the small town of Noti told public health officials they found two of their cats playing with the bat last week. The paper reports that so far this year in Oregon, seven bats and two foxes have tested positive for rabies.
CRESWELL, Ore. (AP) – A Lane County sheriff’s spokesman says a 27-year-old Creswell man wanted for burglary led deputies on a chase that reached speeds of 100 mph on several major highways. Several Creswell schools were placed on temporary lockdown as the man raced through school zones. Deputies say the man was finally arrested in Creswell.
