City Manager Announcement could come this evening

Contact negotiations and a background check are nearing completion on the sole finalist for the Florence City Manager’s position.

The City Council will hold a private, executive session this evening at six to discuss the matter. Later this evening, during the regular session, there is an agenda item to consider and possibly approved the final contract. The name of the final candidate has not yet been announced. There were six under consideration.

Also on tonight’s agenda is a proposal to extend the interim City Manager’s contract through October 27th. His original contract ran through last week.

The council will also hold a public work session beginning at five this evening to discuss potential regulations for medical marijuana dispensaries.

Watch for Wildlife

Drivers on Oregon roadways this time of year should be extra cautious when it comes to being on the lookout for wildlife.

According to state officials, the number of reported vehicle-versus-wildlife crashes in Oregon rose by about 24-percent between 2008 and 2013.

Last year there were 1274 such crashes in Oregon.

Officials believe the numbers are actually higher, because most collisions involving wildlife result in limited damage to the involved vehicle and as such do not get reported to the DMV or police.

Over the past ten years, there have been 98-hundred such collisions reported with 29 fatalities. 12 of those fatalities were motorcyclists.

More than one-third of the total reported crashes typically take place in the September through November period. A number of reasons are cited… better weather; shorter daylight hours; and animals are on the move more.

Oregon State Police urge drivers to remain vigilant. If you see a deer or elk near the road, slow down and remain in your lane; and remember if you see one animal, there may be others.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

There are some things you just shouldn’t throw away.

Not because they are of particular value… but because if tossed out, they can cause environmental damage.

That’s why Lane County, the City of Florence and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality have teamed up once again to round up what they call household hazardous waste.

Paint, household cleaners, car care products, lawn and garden chemicals and more can be dropped off at the Florence Transfer Site just off Rhododendron Drive Friday between noon and five; then again Saturday between eight and two.

Things like paint, electronics and compact fluorescent bulbs should also never be thrown in the trash… they can be delivered to the transfer site year round.
