PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon voters will soon decide whether to adopt a “top-two” primary election system. Instead of only Democrats voting in the Democratic primary and only Republicans voting in the Republican primary, the measure would put all candidates on a single ballot and allow everyone to vote. The top two vote-getters advance to the general election.

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) – An unknown number of piglets died and several people were displaced in a barn fire yesterday in Cottage Grove. South Lane Fire District Division Chief Joe Raade told The Register-Guard that officials believe a heat lamp that was installed to keep the piglets warm was the cause of the fire. Red Cross officials say they are providing emergency assistance to 10 displaced people.

LEADBETTER POINT, Wash. (AP) – A tiny shorebird that nearly went extinct is making a comeback thanks to a $150 million habitat restoration effort. The Longview Daily News reports officials in Washington counted a record high 67 western snowy plovers in their last count in January. Oregon and Washington, which are counted as a single recovery unit by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, had more than 250 breeding pairs this year.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – The National Park Service has added a Lake County cave complex to the National Register of Historic Places. The Klamath Falls Herald and News reports the Paisley Five Mile Point Caves are considered an important archaeological and historic site. Thanks to the Paisley caves, researchers have found evidence of human occupation in Oregon beginning 14,300 years ago.
