PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon man convicted last year of trying to bomb Portland’s downtown square during a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony is scheduled to be sentenced today. Prosecutors have asked U.S. District Judge Garr King to sentence 23-year-old Mohamed Mohamud to 40 years in prison while federal public defenders seek a punishment of no more than 10 years behind bars.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An interfaith service in support of an immigrant activist who has taken refuge at an Oregon church to avoid deportation drew hundreds of people yesterday. The Oregonian reports that representatives from multiple organizations announced their support for 35-year-old Francisco Aguirre. He faces deportation because of an old drug conviction.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Energy says it’s restoring control over hiring decisions to the Bonneville Power Administration. The announcement was made yesterday, more than a year after the government released findings about hiring practices that disadvantaged veterans and about retaliation against whistleblowers.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – State water regulators have denied a permit sought by a mining company trying to develop nickel ore deposits in southwestern Oregon. The Oregon Water Resources Department says water use by the mine could affect protected salmon. Red Flat Nickel Corp. is trying to develop a nickel mine on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest.
