SEATTLE (AP) – After narrowly missing the postseason, the Seattle Mariners say they will raise payroll in 2015 and aggressively pursue offense during the offseason. General manager Jack Zduriencik and manager Lloyd McClendon spoke yesterday, two days after Seattle concluded an 87-75 season. The Mariners finished one game behind Oakland in the AL wild card standings. McClendon and Zduriencik said being in the playoff hunt was important but that no one is satisfied with missing the postseason.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Salvador Perez singled down the left-field line with two outs in the 12th inning, allowing Christian Colon to score from second base and giving the long-suffering Kansas City Royals a 9-8 victory over the Oakland Athletics in a wild AL wild-card game last night. The A’s raced out to a 7-3 lead by the sixth inning. Nori Aoki’s sacrifice fly off Sean Doolittle in the ninth forced extra innings.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) – A four-day weekend is long time to stew over a 31-point, prime-time loss. The Washington Redskins returned to work yesterday, a bit refreshed after a mini-bye yet still somewhat chastened by the 45-14 loss to the New York Giants last Thursday. The Redskins are begining game-planning practices for another prime-time affair at home, this time against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday.
UNDATED (AP) – The Vancouver Canucks travel to Edmonton to face off against the Oilers tomorrow night. The Canucks are coming off a loss Monday night. The Arizona Coyotes defeated the Canucks 4-2.
