SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners’ comeback attempt for a wild-card berth fell short. Felix Hernandez threw five shutout innings to secure the American League ERA title, but the Mariners were eliminated from the postseason despite a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels yesterday. The Oakland A’s completed a 4-0 victory as Seattle was in the fifth inning and finished one game ahead of the Mariners.

TORONTO (AP) – Portland Timbers captain Will Johnson has had surgery to stabilize a fractured tibia and fibula in his right leg. The Major League Soccer team made the announcement yesterday, a day after the Portland midfielder and Canadian international was hurt in the first minute against Toronto FC. Johnson is expected to miss about six months.

KETCHIKAN, Alaska (AP) – A black bear disrupted a girls’ race at the Region V Cross Country meet in Ketchikan. Thorne Bay’s Taylee Nyquest led the first heat of runners. As Nyquest passed, she yelled, “There’s a black bear!” KRBD reports coaches stopped the rest of the girls before the 2-mile mark of the race because of the bear. They had to re-run the course later.

DENVER (AP) – Michael Ferland scored twice, including the go-ahead goal early in the second period, and the Calgary Flames kept Colorado winless in the preseason by beating the Avalanche 2-1 last night. Karri Ramo made 22 saves before giving way to Joni Ortio for the third period. Ryan O’Reilly scored for the Avalanche, who fell to 0-4-1 in the preseason. The teams play each other again tomorrow in Calgary.
