PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – In a TV ad paid for by advocates of labeling genetically modified foods in Oregon, voters are told 64 countries have labeling requirements and none of them saw an increase in food costs. An opponents’ ad says labels would be costly for food producers and consumers and would not show which ingredients in a product are modified. The opposing camps combined have reported contributions of nearly $3 million and expenditures of more than $2 million.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Officials say crews have made more progress toward taming a massive wildfire in Northern California. U.S. Forest Service spokesman Michael Williams says more rain and high humidity Saturday aided firefighters battling the King Fire, which did not see a major spread since it began two weeks ago. Williams says the fire is 87 percent contained.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Student-athletes an Oregon school district must submit to drug tests this year, a proposal that students had been urging. The South Lane School Board has approved a plan to test every student-athlete at least once per season, with some random tests also administered. Students who fail three tests will be removed from the teams.

TORONTO (AP) – Portland Timbers captain Will Johnson has had surgery in Toronto to stabilize a fractured tibia and fibula in his right leg. The Major League Soccer team made the announcement yesterday, a day after the Portland midfielder and Canadian international was hurt in the first minute of a game against Toronto FC.
