SUNRIVER, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber is forcefully rebutting a charge from his Republican challenger that he pays women on his staff less than men. Kitzhaber addressed the issue during a debate with state Rep. Dennis Richardson today in Sunriver. Kitzhaber says it’s “categorically untrue” that his office doesn’t provide equal pay for equal work.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A woman who accused a community college administrator of raping her has sued the school, seeking at least $4.8 million. The Salem Statesman Journal reports the federal court suit alleges Chemeketa Community College knew about what it says was Patrick Lanning’s “history of sexual misconduct” and failed to protect the employee.
ST. HELENS, Ore. (AP) – St. Helens High School was evacuated after a homemade explosive device was found in a student’s locker. KGW-TV reported that students and staff members returned to the school once authorities checked out the building. The youth was arrested. Police described the device as rudimentary and said it could have caused harm but not extensive damage.
ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – The Corps of Engineers plans major work on the jetties on both sides of the mouth of the Columbia River in Oregon and Washington. The Daily Astorian reports projects on the entire jetty system totaling $257 million are expected into 2021. The jetties were built nearly a century ago to help ships navigate the entrance to the Columbia River.
