BROOKINGS, Oregon (AP) – Voters in southern Oregon’s Curry County have rejected a measure that would have doubled their property tax rate to raise $1.6 million a year for three years. The proposal was another in the county’s efforts to keep its jail open. Final, unofficial results showed a 57 percent “no” vote to a 43 percent “yes” vote. Without the money, Sheriff John Bishop said the jail and its staffing are in jeopardy. Voters rejected the last several levies that would have paid for the jail.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon man faces attempted murder and other charges after a shooting at a yard sale. The Eugene Register-Guard reports 34-year-old Phillip Bregg pleaded not guilty to nine charges, including hitting his wife. An affidavit says Bregg went inside the house and began firing from the window, hitting the victim in the shoulder and leg.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – Police in the southern Oregon city of Roseburg say they have arrested a man in the death of a 38-year-old woman killed early yesterday at the convenience store where she worked. The Roseburg News-Review reports that officers found Lori Rothrock severely injured. She was later pronounced dead. Officers say 27-year-old John Flannigan of Roseburg was arrested for investigation of murder.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say a homeless man was stabbed while he slept. Police say 64-year-old Marlin Moser suffered non-life threatening stab wounds. The victim didn’t have a description of the suspect. No arrests have been made.
