GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A wildfire has burned about 3 1/2 square miles near Estacada. Fire Chief Bob Morrisey says about 40 homes are under the most urgent evacuation advisory and residents of more than 120 other homes have been told to be ready to leave if necessary. A large wildfire has also destroyed homes and forced evacuation in the California town of Weed, south of the Oregon state line.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber and Republican state Rep. Dennis Richardson will square off in a debate Oct. 10 at the City Club of Portland. The candidates have three other debates scheduled, in Portland, Eugene and Bend. They’ve also discussed debating in Medford, but details have not been finalized.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has stopped its review of a proposed coal export terminal on the Columbia river while a judge considers an appeal of a decision by the state of Oregon that the terminal could interfere with tribal fishing rights. An Australian company wants the terminal in northeastern Oregon to transfer coal brought by train from Wyoming and Montana.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Health & Science University has raised most of the $500 million needed to secure a matching gift from Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny. OSU says the money has come from more than 6,200 donors in 48 states. The money will be used to help researchers improve early detection of cancer.
