GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber has authorized the state fire marshal to send resources to help fight a wildfire near Estacada that threatens dozens of homes. The fire in the Mount Hood National Forest is one of two new wildfires that started over the weekend and are threatening scattered rural homes in western Oregon, where forests are dry and the weather has been hot.

WEED, Calif. (AP) – Oregon Transportation Department officials say Interstate 5 into California has reopened after a temporary closure due to a fierce wind-driven northern California wildfire. However, they say southbound US 97 in California about 40 miles south of the Oregon border is closed due to the fire. Highway officials said that the US97 closure was expected to last until later this morning.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Portland say a former high school football player accused of punching a teacher multiple times in the head has been arrested for investigation of misdemeanor assault. A Portland Public Schools spokeswoman says the 17-year-old has been expelled from Wilson High School for battery. The newspaper says the student was reportedly angry that he lost his fall athletic eligibility after flunking the teacher’s class. The teacher did not return an Oregonian request for comment.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Another debate has been scheduled in Oregon’s campaign for governor. Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber and Republican state Rep. Dennis Richardson will square off Oct. 10 at the City Club of Portland.
