SAN DIEGO (AP) – Antonio Gates had three touchdown catches and the San Diego Chargers controlled the tempo to keep Seattle’s offense off the field and upset the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks 30-21 yesterday. Gates’ 21-yard catch late in the third quarter was epic, as the star tight end split two defenders and extended for Philip Rivers’ pass, reaching out with his left hand to gather it in. Flat on his back, he held up the ball to show the ref he’d made the catch that gave San Diego a 27-14.

SAN DIEGO (AP) – The NFL says league officials erred by not stopping play for a replay review after the Seattle Seahawks’ Percy Harvin scored on a 51-yard touchdown run against San Diego. The first-quarter play put Seattle ahead 7-3, its only lead of the day. The Chargers won 30-21. Harvin took a pitch from Russell Wilson, got the edge and ran down the left sideline. But Harvin had stepped on the sideline during the run and the NFL said after the game the score was “incorrectly confirmed.”

SEATTLE (AP) – Sam Fuld and Brandon Moss hit solo home runs, Jon Lester combined with three relievers on a seven-hitter and the Oakland Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 4-0 yesterday afternoon. Oakland won consecutive games for the first time in three weeks and more importantly stretched its lead in the AL wild card race. The A’s now hold a 1½ game advantage over Kansas City and a 2½ game lead over the Mariners.

LONDON, Ontario (AP) – Ryan Williams won PGA Tour Canada’s season-ending Tour Championship on Sunday, and Joel Dahmen took the money title to top the five Web.com Tour qualifiers. Williams, from Vancouver, British Columbia, closed with a 4-under 68 at Sunningdale for a one-stroke victory over Adam Cornelson and Clayton Rask. Williams finished at 14-under 274 total. Cornelson shot a 68, and Rask had a 71. Dahmen, a former University of Washington player from Lewiston, Idaho, won two times this season and earned $80,992 to take the lone fully exempt spot next year on the Web.com Tour.
