Public Reception for City Manager Finalists

A half-dozen finalists for the open City Manager position will meet the public this evening at the Florence Events Center. That reception will come after the six meet informally with city employees today; but prior to a round of interviews with current and possibly future elected officials.

The six; three from Colorado and one each from Nevada, Ohio and New Jersey; will have two sets of interviews tomorrow.

They will have one-on-one interviews with the Mayor and council; plus interviews with most of the six candidates seeking one of three positions on the council in the November election.

Interim City Manager Larry Patterson said it’s not the ideal situation to have a ‘nearly complete turnover’ on the council after they hire an administrator, but it’s a situation all six of the management hopefuls are aware of and are willing to take on.

This evening’s reception is from 6:30 to 8:30.

Fifth annual night at the movies

E.T.
Stephen Spielberg’s 1982 release won four Academy Awards and two Golden Globes and was the highest grossing cinematic release of the 1980s.

The old Rhododendron Drive In will make its fifth annual return to Miller Park this weekend.

The drive-in theater operated on what is now the south end of Miller Park for 25 years, ending in 1981.

Coast Radio, along with American Cinema Equipment and the Boys and Girls Club will present a free showing of the 1982 Academy Award winning feature ET, the Extra Terrestrial tomorrow night.

The south gate, just off 15th street, will open at six with the showing at eight. There’s no cost to get in. The Boys and Girls Club will be offering concessions.

Disaster Expo Tomorrow

Greentrees will host another disaster preparedness expo tomorrow.

A variety of experts will be on hand to talk about things like how to prepare emergency kits; how to get ready for medical emergencies and post-disaster communication.

Residents in Greentrees Village believe they have a vested interest in being prepared for any possible earthquake and tsunami. The portion of the development along the west side of Rhododendron Drive will be directly in the path of any onrush of water that might come after a nine-point-oh quake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the Oregon Coast.

Tomorrow’s expo from 11 to four is open to the public.

Habitat Beach Walk Back on Track

After a couple false starts, the planning for Habitat for Humanity’s largest single fundraiser of the year got back on track.

The popular Habitat Beach Walk from the North Jetty to Driftwood Shores and back will begin tomorrow at nine AM.

Habitat Director Kate McBroom-Redwine says Beach Walk T-Shirts are available in exchange for a – quote – “generous donation”.

Live music and refreshments will be available at the turnaround, along with an invitation to stop and build a sandcastle.

So far, Habitat has completed 24 houses in Florence. Money raised tomorrow will be used to help complete two currently under construction, along with beginning home number 27.
