SEATTLE (AP) – Brad Miller had a tiebreaking two-run triple in the eighth inning and drove in three runs, helping the Seattle Mariners gain in the AL wild-card race with a 4-1 victory over the Houston Astros yesterday. The Mariners moved one game behind Oakland, which lost to the White Sox, 5-4 in 12 innings, for the first wild card spot.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Two key injuries will test the depth of the Seattle Seahawks’ secondary, especially in the coming weeks. Cornerback Jeremy Lane, the Seahawks’ nickelback who plays against slot receivers, was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury yesterday. Cornerback Tharold Simon underwent minor knee surgery last week but is still expected to be out at least four weeks.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith says the video showing Ray Rice striking his then-fiancee in February was disturbing. Smith was at the Seattle Seahawks’ practice facility yesterday beginning his plan to visit all 32 teams. Smith says he has not spoken with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell since the video came out.
SEATTLE (AP) – Washington has looked strong both offensively and defensively this year. The problem is, it hasn’t happened in the same game. While the Huskies search for consistency, coach Chris Petersen would be happy to see his offense keep performing at the level it did against Eastern Washington. After failing to score in the second half of its opener, Washington moved the ball much better on Saturday, thanks largely to 356 rushing yards.
