Viking Gridiron Opener A Win

Christian Jakobsen rushed for 102 yards on five carries… three of those made their way into the endzone… and the Siuslaw Vikings started the season Friday night with a convincing 49-14 victory over the Newport Cubs in Florence.

Scott Gordon caught two passes… both of them for touchdowns… for a total of 80 yards and Billy Jones and Maverick Michael also each rushed for touchdowns. Joseph Dotson completed 11 of 15 passes for 159 yards.

On the volleyball court

Saturday, the Siuslaw Vikings fell in two close matches to Glide in the championship match and finished second in the Reedsport Invitational.

The Vikings breezed through pool play earlier in the day; downing North Douglas, Coquille and Glide; then easily bounced Oakland in the Semi, but the Wildcats rebounded for the win in the championship.

Outside hitter Hannaleah Jacobsen led stats with 21 kills for the Vikings. Elyssa Rose and Brittany Long each had 16.

College Football

The number three Oregon Ducks trailed briefly in the third quarter then reeled off four unanswered touchdowns for a 46-27 win over number seven Michigan State Saturday afternoon at Autzen. Marcus Mariota set a new career Oregon record with three touchdown passes. That brings his total to 69. Oregon is now ranked number two in the AP polls.

Oregon State couldn’t afford a slow start Saturday night against Hawaii in Honolulu and they didn’t disappoint, jumping off to a 31-7 lead at the half. But a slow finish almost cost them dearly. The Beavers held on for a 38-30 win over the Rainbow Warriors. Sean Mannion threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns.
