ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Derek Holland pitched seven impressive innings in his second start off the disabled list, and the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 1-0 yesterday to snap an eight-game losing streak. Texas gave interim manager Tim Bogar his first victory in his third game. Seattle, which had won five in a row, finished a 5-2 road trip. Shawn Tolleson worked the eighth, and Neftali Feliz completed the seven-hitter for his eighth save.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – Kalif Alhassan scored in the 86th minute to give the Portland Timbers a 3-3 tie with the San Jose Earthquakes on yesterday. Alhassan tied it a minute after Chris Wondolowski scored his second of the game for San Jose. Portland (8-8-11) moved into sole possession of the fifth and final playoff position in the Western Conference, one point ahead of Vancouver. San Jose (6-10-0) is eight points behind the Timbers.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Marcus Mariota keeps piling up records at Oregon. What he’d really like to collect is wins. After Oregon’s 46-27 victory over then-No. 7 Michigan State on Saturday, the Ducks are an early favorite for one of the spots in college football’s first playoff. As a result of the victory, Oregon climbed a spot in the AP Top 25 to No. 2 – and earned 16 first-place votes from the media panel.

HONOLULU (AP) – Sean Mannion threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night and Oregon State beat Hawaii 38-30. Mannion completed 26 of 37 passes as the Beavers (2-0) racked up 464 yards of total offense against the Rainbow Warriors (0-2). Victor Bolden caught 11 passes for 119 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown reception early in the second half. Terron Ward rushed for 124 yards and scored on runs of 32 and 2 yards in the first half.
