OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Kyle Seager and Corey Hart homered leading off the seventh inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 2-1 yesterday to win the three-game series between the AL playoff contenders. The home runs erased a stellar start by Jon Lester (13-10) and helped Mariners ace Felix Hernandez (14-5) win for the first time in four outings.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tharold Simon is expected to have surgery on an injured knee in the coming days, head coach Pete Carroll said. Simon had been held out of practice for over a week due to the injury. With Simon out, the Seahawks will turn to DeShawn Shead and Marcus Burley as their reserve cornerback options for tonight’s season opener against the Green Bay Packers.

SEATTLE (AP) – The NFL says concussions decreased by 13 percent overall during the 2013 season from the previous year, and the number of concussions coming from helmet-to-helmet contact was down 23 percent. Those are the findings of the NFL’s Health and Safety committee, which released its report to The Associated Press yesterday.

PHOENIX (AP) – The Pac-12 has 10 returning quarterbacks from last season and some talented newcomers. Near the top of the list are a pair of Heisman Trophy contenders: Oregon’s Marcus Mariota, a finalist for last year’s award, and UCLA’s Brett Hundley. The conference also includes Arizona State’s Taylor Kelly, Oregon State’s Sean Mannion, USC’s Cody Kessler and Stanford’s Kevin Hogan.
