(AP) – James Paxton pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning and the Seattle Mariners held off a late rally by Oakland for a 6-5 win last night, handing the Athletics their fifth loss in six games. Seattle closer Fernando Rodney took over to begin the ninth with a 6-3 lead and retired the first two batters. Seattle is third in the AL wild-card standings.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Marshawn Lynch only stared when asked about his contract situation and only gave brief football-related answers. The Seattle Seahawks running back spoke with the media for the first time this season yesterday. He held out from the first week of training camp unhappy with his contract situation, then reported only after his deal was slightly restructured to include more guaranteed money for the 2014 season.
UNDATED (AP) – Freshman running back Royce Freeman made his anticipated debut for the No. 3 Oregon Ducks and showed a glimpse of the talent that was kept behind closed doors all summer. Freeman ran for 75 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries for the Ducks in Saturday’s 62-13 victory over South Dakota.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Former Portland State linebacker Zach Walen has filed a $5 million suit against Portland State, the NCAA and Oregon Health Sciences University claiming he was not treated properly for a concussion. The suit claims that Portland State cleared Walan to play even though he had not passed the required tests, and ongoing symptoms eventually forced him to withdraw from school.
