Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Adam Dunn provided instant pop for the struggling Athletics, hitting a towering, two-run homer in his first at-bat for Oakland to highlight a 6-1 win over the Seattle Mariners yesterday in a matchup of playoff contenders. Brad Miller homered leading off the sixth for Seattle, which came into the series opener as the American League’s top road team.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have put first baseman-designated hitter Jesus Montero on the suspended list. The 24-year-old Montero was recalled from his rehabilitation assignment Friday following a verbal altercation with a Mariners scout at a Class A Northwest League game.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Cliff Avril watched Kevin Williams going through practice drills, amazed by what he was seeing from a defensive tackle entering his 12th season. It’s why Seattle pursued Williams so much during the offseason. The addition of Williams in June seemed like a smart way for Seattle to add a veteran to a deep defensive line at a relative bargain. Injuries during training camp have made Williams’ signing more vital.

SEATTLE (AP) – Washington will turn to Cyler Miles at quarterback when the No. 25 Huskies make their home debut under coach Chris Petersen. Miles will start against Eastern Washington, Petersen announced yesterday. He replaces Jeff Lindquist, who struggled to move the offense for most of Washington’s 17-16 win at Hawaii in the opener.
